Making special guardianship work for children and their guardians
18th June 2020
A new briefing paper (available here) summarising key practice messages from research on special guardianship and international kinship care has been published by the Nuffield Family Justice Observatory. It aims to inform decision-making and promote best practice.
It draws together the research evidence on risk and protective factors, child outcomes, the stability of special guardianship and practitioner perspectives.
The briefing paper is based on an evidence review (available here) co-authored by John Simmonds, OBE, CoramBAAF and Judith Harwin, Rebecca Brown and Karen Broadhurst, Centre for Child and Family Justice Research, Lancaster University. The review was commissioned by the Nuffield Family Justice Observatory and published in 2019.
The evidence review helped inform new recommendations (available here) and best practice guidance on special guardianship issued by the President of the Family Division this week.
